Most people do not understand how important certain animals are for our survival. Even if you may not believe it, life would in principle be impossible without bees. This small insect, which many people are afraid of, plays an important role in the ecosystem. Therefore, read this article to learn more about this extremely important insect.
A bis task
There are thousands of animal species in the world, both small and large, that have totally different habits. However, the one who makes sure that life continues on earth is the bees. Yes, you read that right. This yellow and black insect travels tirelessly from flower to flower and is responsible for pollinating flowers and plants, as well as producing food for other living beings.
The world’s biodiversity depends on bees and the process known as symbiotic dependence. This relationship starts when the bee uses pollen and nectar to feed and create honey. During this process, they also transfer pollen from one plant to another.
The process of cross-pollination between plants needs a body that is responsible for transmitting the genetic information that will be used to produce seeds. Bees not only help to grow wild vegetation, but also half of all the vegetables and fruits we eat daily.
So without bees, agriculture would disappear, and as a consequence kill millions of animals and people. Nature is very wise and so is the food chain: pollination creates plants, which are consumed by herbivores that are consumed by carnivores. If the first part of the equation disappears, the rest disappears.
Why do bees disappear?
The population of insects has decreased by 25% over the past 30 years. It is due to many different reasons, all of which are ultimately the work of humanity. To begin with, industrialized agriculture, which uses herbicides and pesticides, is responsible for the loss of various plant and animal environments.
Second, pollutants make it difficult for bees to survive in various environments plagued by smog and heavy metals in the air. Climate change, increased rainfall, drought and rising temperatures are also fatal to bees as they affect the quality and quantity of nectar that bees collect.
As if this were not enough, some countries are trying to make robotic bees for pollination of plants because they seem to be more efficient than real bees (as if flying 800 kilometers in their lives is not efficient enough).
Not to mention the fact that many people are afraid of being stung. Many people who see a bee fly by kill it with insect spray or kill it with something. This is very tragic because bees do not attack unless they feel threatened.
Just because they are near you does not mean they will sting you. The reason they do not do this is because if they stab you, they will die. This defense technique is only for extreme cases when the bee community is threatened.
How can we prevent the bees from disappearing?
After learning that life on earth would be impossible without the existence of bees, you can act through the following steps:
- Have a colorful garden full of plants. This will attract bees and they will pollinate your plants (do not worry, they will not sting you if you are nearby).
- Eat local, organic and seasonally produced products to reduce the use of pesticides. It is also a healthier choice for you.
- Buy honey and its by-products – such as queen bee jelly, cosmetics, pollen and propolis from organic beekeepers.
- Do not kill bees when they are nearby: let them fly around without disturbing them.
If biodiversity and pollinators disappear, human civilization as we know it has very little time left. The number of living beings would be drastically reduced and those who survive would not have natural food to eat. Instead, humanity’s food would be prepared in factories or laboratories. Therefore, it can be said that without bees, there would be no life on earth.
