People often say that dogs are easy to train, but many encounter problems when it’s time. It may seem like they do not understand what you are saying or they are simply not listening to you. If this is the case for you and if the dog is not listening, the tips below may be helpful.
When you are going to teach the pet commands, you must have perseverance, patience, dog candy and rewards. The latter is actually quite important if your dog is not listening to you. Follow the steps below and you will see that it starts listening.
Choose what to give the dog
First and foremost, you should think about what to give your dog if the dog is not listening. Some prefer a new toy, while others prefer a sausage or some ham. Other dogs settle for dog food or canned food. You know exactly what your dog likes. The more your dog likes what you give it, the more it will listen to you.
Let the dog see the reward
When the dog has started to follow you and knows what you have in your hand, sit on the sofa and wait for the dog to arrive. Open your hand and let the dog smell the candy, but do not give it yet.
Every time your dog tries this piece of candy, you should close your hand because you have now managed to get the dog’s attention.
The first command
Now that you have the reward in hand, you can start by teaching the dog the first command. The dog is of course interested in the reward and not in you, but you can change this by lifting the reward towards you and saying “look at me”.
When you have made the dog look at you instead of the reward, you should reward it. Your dog will then begin to associate this command and your voice with a reward.
This is not easy to achieve, and you will probably not succeed the first time. You will need to repeat this a few times. However, the more you do it, the easier it will be to get the dog to listen to you.
By following the previous steps, you will now have the dog’s attention because it knows that it will be rewarded if it behaves well. It is not something you can deny. The dogs love us, but they love food even more.
With the previous exercise, however, you will have managed to get the dog to look at you when you call, and make it listen to what you have to say. You can now use the same method to teach him commands such as sitting, lying down, beautiful paw, catching something or jumping.
Your dog will always be more inclined to respond to the command when you call him in the park and on the street, or when you want him to stop barking.
So if you want to start training the dog and it does not listen to you, the voice should be determined and at the same time calm. You will not achieve anything by shouting. Positive reinforcement will always be more effective.
