Ukrainian Levkoy: An Exciting And New Breed

Ukrainian levkoy: an exciting and new breed

Despite the fact that there are many cats all over the world, some homeless and others in animal shelters, new breeds are still being created. Hairless cats are fashionable, and Ukrainian levkoy is a relatively new breed that appeared in the early 2000s.

They have a very strange and impressive appearance, and they are affectionate, docile and intelligent. They are also perfect domestic cats and can adapt well to small spaces.

Hairless cats, which actually have a very thin coat that is almost impossible to see, have recently become very popular. Many of these new breeds come from Russia or the regions of the former Soviet Union.

In the case of Ukrainian levkoy, breeder Elena Birjukova crossed a donskoy (below) with a Scottish fold. Thus was born the first Ukrainian levkoy in 2004 – a hairless cat with ears that fall forward due to its Scottish genes.

Despite its growing popularity, organizations such as the World Cat Federation (WCF) and the International Cat Association (TICA) still do not recognize this breed. However, it has been allowed in clubs for Russian and Ukrainian races.

Everyone has their own preference, but that does not mean that not all animals should be loved and appreciated. Even though it looks like an alien  , you probably see its elegant and muscular beauty, despite the fact that it has many wrinkles in its thick skin, especially on the stomach, head and neck.

In addition to its lack of fur and large ears that fold forward, its other physical characteristics are:

  • Size: medium
  • Weight: between 4 and 6 kg for males and between 3.5 and 5 kg for females.
  • Height: between 20 and 25 cm for males and between 18 and 23 cm for females.
  • Colors: gray, black, white, brown.
  • Tail: narrow
  • Legs: long and muscular
  • Head: flat and cone-shaped. It has an angled face with distinct cheekbones. Some say it looks like a dog.
  • Whiskers: short and slightly curly.
  • Eyes: almond-shaped and light-colored.

If your home is small, a Ukrainian levkoy can be the perfect pet. Because they do not become restless, they can adapt to small spaces. With that said, you should of course think both once and twice before getting animals to an apartment. Being able to go out from time to time is also important for cats.

This breed is sweet, sociable and outgoing. They tend to worship their owner and will probably follow you around the house, which is another reason why people say they are like dogs.

They are mentally stable animals, but they do not like to be alone. If there are no people at home during the day, it is probably a good idea to have other pets to join.

With an expected lifespan of between 9 to 15 years, this cat needs some special care due to its lack of fur. To maintain a good body temperature, it needs a diet high in protein and calories. It is also not a stupid idea to give this breed a shirt if it is cold, as in the picture below.

You also need to protect them from colds and sun exposure, which can irritate and burn the skin. Talk to your veterinarian about the best way to care for them, as they may have dermatological problems.

This breed also needs to be bathed at least once a month. This is because their skin releases a protective oily substance that absorbs dirt.

If you are looking for an allergy – friendly pet  , this animal is not what you are looking for, even though it has hardly any fur. Allergies are actually caused by dead cells from the cat’s epidermis, as well as a substance in their saliva.
