Is it possible to train a cat? What do you think?

We often hear about dog training and how important it is. It seems pretty easy to teach a dog to follow orders like “sit, stand, stop, lie down, shake paw, drop” etc. You can even teach them all this in our own home! It is not as often you hear about training your cat. What do you think? Is it even possible?

There are many differences between cats and dogs. It is said that dogs are among the most intelligent animals and that it is therefore easy for them to learn to follow different commands. But what about cats? It turns out that you can also train them so that they follow basic rules at home.

If you do not try to train your cat, the cat will live independently and do exactly what he wants without any rules. Animals act on instinct, so they need a guide to know what to do and how to behave.

Is it possible to train a cat? How?

Cat sits in the arms of a person.

The answer is yes! If you read on, we will tell you how to train your cat.

Recognize the cat’s bad behavior

Before we try to stop bad behavior, we must learn to recognize the behavior itself. In this way we can know where the problem in behavior comes from and understand why it occurs. In cats, the most common behavioral problems are the following:

  • Avoid using the litter box
  • Marks furniture and other things with urine or claws
  • River you or other family members when you play
  • Acts aggressively towards its owner or other people
  • Acts aggressively against other cats in the home, or other pets
  • Suffers from stress and anxiety
  • Afraid of objects or people

Now that we know what the most common behavioral problems are, we are ready to do the job and start training our own cat.

Train a cat by correcting behavior

Since we already know what cats should not do (unnatural behavior), we are now ready to try to change these behavior patterns. To do this, we must make sure to avoid punishment, whether it is verbal or physical. Punishment is not acceptable when dealing with a living being.

Punishing will not help at all. In fact, it will have the exact opposite effect. The cat will be afraid of you and will not want to play with you, or with other family members. In addition, it can also result in aggressive behavior in your cat.

Although penalties may seem to offer solutions, these are always short-term. Therefore, although it is normal to feel frustrated when the animal makes a mistake, you should take a deep breath or walk away until you can calm down. This way you avoid doing or saying something you will later regret.

Correct the cat from a distance

What does this really mean? Well, to make the animal relate textures, smells or unpleasant sounds to make mistakes. As a result, the cat will avoid repeating these behaviors. But how can you do that?

Cat looks around carefully.
  1. Textures. These can include aluminum foil, glue, plastic mat or any other material that you think your cat will not like. You can place these in the places you do not want your cat to go.
  2. Scents. If there are surfaces or places where you do not want your cat to be, you can place cotton balls dipped in different scents that you think will be unpleasant for your pet. These may include citronella, air purifier, aloe and eucalyptus. Just make sure they are not dangerous to your pet!
  3. Tastes. You can rub or place different foods on the surfaces you do not want your cat to keep house on. These can include citrus, hot sauces, red peppers or any other food that you think your cat does not like and will avoid. Experiment a little!
  4. Sound. For example, you can use a whistle to warn your cat not to go to a particular place. In addition, if you have a bell or something else noisy that is annoying, they are excellent means of training a cat and conditioning its behavior.

Also keep in mind the following

  • Do not pay attention to your cat when it behaves badly during playtime.
  • Maintain the cat’s routines.
  • Make sure the cat has access to a claw board and daily play times.
  • You can use artificial pheromones sold in stores to reduce a cat’s stress and anxiety.
