Children With Dogs Are More Independent

Here at My Animals, we never get tired of discussing how good it is for children to grow up with animals.
Children with dogs are more independent

A study by the Faculty of Public Health at the University of Western Australia believes that children with dogs are more independent.

What was the Australian study on children with dogs about?

The study, led by Dr. Hayley Christian and published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health discusses how a dog improves children’s mobility and personal independence.

To arrive at this solution, Christian and her research team analyzed data they took concerning 181 children between the ages of 8-15, both boys and girls.

The researchers also included the parents’ attitudes regarding certain topics in the study.

They included, for example, whether the children were allowed to go to school themselves or play in a nearby park. At the same time, they checked whether the parents went to these places with other children or adults.

Why are children with dogs more independent?

They stated that a very small number went without the parents’ supervision. The main reason for this was that they were afraid that they might be involved in an accident or be exposed to a crime.

The study showed that children who leave home with an older sibling or a dog make their parents feel calmer.

This is important for parents to be able to start giving their children more freedom.

Dogs, good weapon bearers to better raise children

They are therefore not only good playmates for the children, which ensures that they have a good childhood – having a dog also brings with it many other benefits, such as:

  • Encourages children to take responsibility. As children grow up, they will slowly but surely learn that they need to take care of the animal. Give it food, water, take it for walks, etc.
  • They do not get sick as often. Children who have lived with pets since they were small have a stronger immune system and develop fewer allergies when they grow up.
  • They understand that they must respect the dog and all living beings. For example, they do not treat them badly when they eat or sleep.
  • This ensures that they perform more physical activity and spend more time outdoors. This keeps them away from computers, TVs, smartphones, etc. – at least for a while.

Other benefits of the little one having a dog

Various research results have shown that children with dogs:

  • Are more intuitive and sensitive
  • Has a better self-esteem
  • Have more stimulated senses
  • Is more often in a better mood
  • Succeeds in developing more empathy
  • Is better at social integration
  • Has enhanced non-verbal communication

In order for all this to be possible, however, you must set a good example for the child to gain self-confidence. He will then understand that responsibility and freedom go hand in hand.

A family dog will no doubt help you raise a healthy and happy child. It will also make the child independent at an early age, which will make him a better person in life.

So if you can, feel free to add a pet to the family. Both the children and the adults in the family will thank you.
