This issue has given rise to many debates around the world, and various conclusions have been reached. Animal lovers can always put money on it, but skeptics always say no regarding whether dogs can smile on purpose.
At My Animals, we love our furry friends and believe not only that dogs can smile on purpose, but also that the smile is visible throughout their faces. They show feelings in the face just like us.
Can dogs smile on purpose?
According to scientific studies, dogs can not only show joy by wagging their tails, but also make different curves with their mouths to show that they are happy, which can be interpreted as a smile.
So yes, you are not crazy, dogs can actually smile, and it’s not just something that owners imagine.
Dogs’ smiles reflect their happiness, their deepest feelings and their emotions. The first person to air this idea was Nobel Laureate Konrad Lorenz.
It started with him playing with his dog and thinking it was smiling. He explained in his book Man Meets Dog that a dog’s smile transforms its face and makes it stick out its tongue a bit.
It can almost be likened to a laugh! Although it is obvious that dogs will never laugh as we do, everything seems to indicate that they can actually express joy by smiling.
How do dogs laugh?
This topic has been studied by experts in dog behavior. Patricia Simonet is one of these experts, and she came up with a great idea. She decided to record how dogs “laugh”.
She simply gathered a bunch of dogs and recorded the sounds they made while playing and having fun.
What she discovered was amazing: not only was their panting different when they had fun, but it was also contagious to other dogs!
When one dog laughed, the others started doing the same. And who can deny that one of the characteristics of laughter is that it is contagious?
Simone believed that these recordings could be used for something more than just a simple study. She thought that if you used them in dog stables, the sound of laughing dogs could be good for abandoned animals.
And it turned out to be true! The mood of the dogs in the kennels and shelters improved when they listened to the recordings.
Something more than just a smile
Some research studies do not just state that dogs can smile, but claim that they even have their own sense of humor. How they use this with other beings, however, remains to be seen.
One thing that is certain is that animals can show joy and happiness with a smile, which we previously only thought dogs could do with their tails.
How to make your dog smile?
We all want our pets to be happy, but it requires both time and energy, as well as patience. But a smile is worth all the effort, and if you want to make your dog smile, here are some tips:
- Play with your dog: every dog needs to run, jump and play with you. Take it to a place where it can run free and you can chase each other. Throw a ball or let her play with other dogs. If you have never seen her smile before, you should have the camera ready. After a little play, the smile will not last long.
- Pat your dog: spend time pampering it, saying kind things and petting it to elicit smiles.
- Give your dog a massage: it is possible that your dog after a nice massage on the stomach will smile at you with pleasure and comfort.
We know that there will always be debates on this subject, but it has already been proven that dogs can smile on purpose. Do not miss your dog’s smiles and make an effort to attract them!
